CLIMATE FINANCE INTEGRITY CAMPAIGN AT SEOUL STATION

Climate Governance Integrity Campaign at Seoul Station |
Climate Finance – money contracted to assist the at-risk countries to mitigate climate change and adapt to its effects – is vulnerable to corruption. Without strong climate governance standards, the money can be easily laundered and misused, often leading to devastating impacts for already suffering countries, including the island states, developing countries, and many African countries.
On December 1, 2018, Transparency International-Korea, supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety through Transparency International, held a campaign about integrity in climate finance. The event was organized through the collaboration between the Seoul Foreign School Transparency Club, TI-Korea Youth, and TI-Korea staff members.

The campaign aimed at raising awareness in the broader public about climate finance, corruption effects in climate finance, and the institutions dealing with this issue, mainly the Green Climate Fund (GCF). In addition, TI-Korea wanted to get a clearer picture whether the Korean public thinks their country is also suffering from climate change and needs an adequate additional framework to combat this issue, or whether it’s already strong and ready to assist other developing countries in the quest to achieve integrity in climate finance to support the intended beneficiaries.
Received feedback would assist the Chapter in its future projects as well as understanding the depth of the problem. The climate finance integrity campaign at Seoul Station was an excellent opportunity to assess the governance standards for climate change, as seen by the civil society.

Climate Governance Integrity Policy Proposal |
The Seoul Station management (which signed a memorandum of understanding [MOU] with TI-Korea), permitted us to hold our climate integrity and governance campaign inside the station. This has given us a great advantage and opportunity to attract people of all ages and gender. Such diversity made the survey results even more valuable. The campaign showed the aspects where the Chapter can improve its performance to raise awareness and garner broader public support for future endeavors.
